Skin Lightening Creams

Posted in : Skin Care

(added 25 days ago)

Skin Lightening CreamsOver the past five years, there have been 240 unique skin-lightening products launched in India, promising fairer skin with prolonged usage. International brands like Dove, Olay, and Garnier have all developed their own night creams, facial cleansers, and moisturisers, with Vaseline producing a particularly offensive “skin lightening” Facebook app to accompany their product launch in 2010. The Vaseline app beckons Indian users to download their profile picture and drag a line across their face that digitally transforms their dark looks to a dramatically lighter visage.

This advertisement was released by Vaseline
This past year, several companies have taken the obsession with fair skin to a new level, releasing products that lighten not just the users face, but their armpits and genital areas. Hardly a moment can be spent watching TV before a Bollywood star pops on screen sharing their transformation from dusky to milky-white. Even Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu, known for their dark-skinned beauty, have endorsed products.

What’s next? Eyeball bleaching? Selling genetic alteration tools so parents can determine their children’s skin tone before birth?
More harmful then the products themselves are the societal pressures placed on dark-skinned individuals to “lighten up” as one Dove commercial hailed. It’s rare that the market attempts to fill a gap
when there is no demand and in India, where skin whitening creams outsell Coca-Cola, the demand is high.

Where has this obsession with fairness originated?
In part, it’s probably due to ancient scriptures, epics, or folk tales. The good character is always portrayed as being fair in complexion, suggesting that the fair are fair dealing and the dark complexioned has evil intentions. The other part of the equation can be linked to 200 years of British rule, where being white meant you were a ruler and being brown meant you were the ruled. Add a complex caste system and the resulting inequalities, and you have a situation ripe for idealising whiteness as the height of beauty.

Why skin creams are harmful
Even more problematic than the society-wide desire for fair skin are the fair skin creams themselves, which cause skin cancer, liver, and kidney damage. There are two main chemicals found in most skin lightening products – hydroquinone or mercury, both extremely toxic. Hydroquinone is a powerful chemical used in photo processing and the manufacture of rubber. Mercury in the form of mercury chloride is carcinogenic and appears on a list of toxic substances that can only be purchased via pharmacies with prescribed labels.

Both of these chemicals prevent the production of melanin, initially making the user appear lighter. In the long term, however, these chemicals actually react with ultra violet rays and lead to more pigmentation and premature ageing. Typically, when this happens, the user applies more skin lightening cream, creating a vicious cycle.

Is this legal?
After reading about the health problems associated with hydroquinone and mercury, you must be wondering: how are these creams legal? They wouldn’t be sold in India if they were that harmful, right?
Well in some countries, they aren’t legal. Certain skin-lightening products containing hydroquinone are already banned for sale in the European Union, Australia, and Japan. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have put forth a proposal to ban the over-the-counter sale of such products. Many countries are taking steps to ban “over the counter” lightening products, making a prescription (and dermatologist approval a pre-requisite).

What should I do if I still want lighter skin?
Keep in mind that it’s not possible to safely lighten your skin completely and that advertisements and TV shows (and also those Bollywood stars) do not present realistic results from usage of whitening cream. Many common myths about whitening your skin (like if you eat white foods you are more likely to have lighter skin) are just that: myths, completely unfounded and not based on fact. If you still feel the need to buy skin creams, check out this article that has the best information on the types of creams to buy.

What should I keep in mind?
It’s important to understand that different regions of India will produce a diversity of skin types and colouring. What is presented as the ideal of beauty, white skin and light eyes, can be attained in the short-term by using these lightening creams. But over a long-term they will be severely detrimental.
India, as a culture, must also look inwardly to redefine what is beautiful. A majority of those walking around on the street don’t look like the models on television. Unlike bodyweight or hair colour, there is not a healthy way to lighten skin (at least not to the degree expressed in commercials). The pressure from society, family members, and even the matrimonial section in the newspapers, is directly contributing to an obsession with light skin that has persisted for centuries.

Fake Eyelashes Made of Mink Fur Are the Latest Way to Get That Sexy, Sultry Look

Posted in : Eye Care

(added a month ago!)

Fake Eyelashes Made of Mink Fur Are the Latest Way to Get That Sexy, Sultry LookSuper long and thick eyelashes? Yes, please! I still wistfully recall the time I had those incredible eyelash extensions. Considering the cost, that's not something I could maintain. So in my quest for long lashes, I took my search for false eyelashes out of the beauty aisle and went into woods. Fur. Fur. Fur. What about minks? Here, minky minkys. Your hair is so soft and luxurious I want to make eyelashes out of you. Here, minky minkys. No minks were harmed for this post. I. Could. Never. I can't hunt in heels. That's just ridiculous. I did, however, test out Aura Lashes made from real mink fur.

If you made it this far into the post without freaking out thank you! You will be pleased to know that seriously no minks were harmed for this post of to make these lashes. Aura says that the fur is "collected and recycled during the shedding seasons of the mink animal thus causing no harm to these beautiful creatures." They are quite adorable. Like little ferrets with cute wittle ears and tiny wittle eyes. Look! A mink! Look at those little bow legs! Adorables!

As I stare at this little furry guy I'm thinking thank goodness humans don't grow hair that's as soft as a mink. If so, no one would shave anywhere ever. And there would be heavy petting in public all the time. My gosh! I just want to pet Mr. Minky here. Wearing him on my eyelashes is a little weird, maybe. But so is slathering chemicals all over ourselves and most of us have done that for years thinking that most lotions, shampoos, or mascaras weren't filled with toxins. Thankfully, we've wised up. Most of the time. We try, right?

Still, I love trying things in the name of beauty products. So here I am wearing mink. It's natural. Glued into place with the most natural glue I could find. Aura's mink lashes on the left. Just my mascara on the right.

On hello dramatic eye! Also in case you were wondering, the little mink furs collected are sterilized first and are hypo-allergenic. How to apply fake eyelashes is fairly simple: Just a little glue, a sort of steady hand, and patience to get them to fit above your natural lashes but on the lash line. I had to first trim them to fit my eyes. You can re-use your mink lashes around 25 times and they are so soft. As soft as a mink, of course. And as far as false eyelashes go, quite comfortable as well. Aura has seven different styles that vary in length and thickness, all $19 each . I'm wearing Girls Night Out in this photo. Check out the full line of Aura Lashes here.

Diane Kruger Named New Face of Chanel Skin Care

Posted in : Face Care

(added a month ago!)

Sixteen years after she posed for her first Chanel ad, Diane Kruger has been announced as the new face of the French fashion house's skin care line. The model-turned-actress made her debut in a Chanel ad back in 1996, when she starred in the company's Allure fragrance campaign, and she teamed up with them again in 2007 for the Paris Biarritz handbag ads, which Karl Lagerfeld personally shot.

Diane Kruger Named New Face of Chanel Skin Care

We can't say we blame the company for tapping the German beauty yet again, since we're guessing most women would line up to buy skin care products that hold the promise of making their skin look as flawless as Kruger's does at the age of 36! No word on whether the Kaiser will pick up the camera a second time to capture Kruger for the new campaign, but the chances seem pretty good. He did, after all, recently shoot Tilda Swinton for Chanel's latest campaign. Whatever the case, we'll have to wait until later this year when Chanel reveals the new ads to find out.

Chetana writes:
Due to lack of time, stress, pollution and other factors, we often do not take care of our skin. As a result, a number of skin problems start showing up. To counter these, I am sharing a few easy face care tips to get healthy skin.

1. Smile Often
Smiling is a natural drug for face care! It releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. As a result of smiling, we feel good and appear younger for a longer time compared to those who sulk.

2. Cleansing:
Make sure you cleanse your face at least twice a day with a gentle face wash/cleanser that suits your skin.

We need to maintain a thorough skin cleansing routine every day to remove all the impurities and grime build up from the facial skin and pores. A gentle daily face wash can be used or you can opt for the one that has gentle exfoliating beads to scrub away accumulated dirt on a daily basis. Never scrub your face too harshly. Try to make a habit of cleansing at least twice, in your daily routine. Remove makeup thoroughly before hitting the sack to prevent skin ageing, breakouts, blotchy and unhealthy skin.

3. Using a toner is a must after cleansing:
Toning is the next important step after cleansing. If you are in a hurry, try taking few drops of Rose Water (a lot of good brands are available including Patanjali, FabIndia, Lotus, Khadi, Dabur etc) and pat on your face. This is the best toner that suits almost every skin type and instantly makes your skin feel refreshed.

4. Moisturizing after toning:
This is the last step of the CTM (Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing) routine that we simply cannot afford to skip. Moisturizing does not necessarily have to be with greasy skin creams. A lot of products are available which can act as a savior for your skin.

For oily skin, opt for a non-comedogenic facial moisturizer that won’t clog the skin pores. A water-based gel or moisturizer can work very well. Brands like Neutrogena and Sebamed have products specifically designed for this skin type.

For combination skin, an oil-free, non greasy, skin-balancing moisturizer should be used. Again, there are drugstore brands specifically developed for such skin type. If you have sensitive skin, look for a hypoallergenic and fragrance-free moisturizer.

For dry-skinned beauties, moisturizers containing glycerin, lanolin, Shea butter, almond oil, petrolatum etc help to lock in and retain the moisture. If you going out during daytime, always use a moisturizer with a sunscreen or apply a sunscreen after applying your moisturizer once your skin completely absorbs the moisturizer.

5. Sunscreen is a must for spotless skin:
The harmful UV rays of the sun can cause significant skin damage and skin cancer too. So, wear a sunscreen (minimum of SPF 30) during the day no matter which season of the year you are in.

6. Dietary habits:
Water itself is a great natural hydrant, so drink plenty of it throughout the day to detoxify and get naturally glowing skin. Sip water, green tea or a homemade fruit juice instead of tea, coffee or aerated drinks. Eat at least one fruit daily, preferably those with high-water content or citrus fruits. Adding green, leafy veggies, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, almonds, Salmon and tuna fish to your diet will bring noticeable improvement in skin texture.

Last but not the least getting the best beauty sleep for 7-8 hours every night will give you a wonderful skin.
