Top 10 Nutrition and Fitness Tips

Discovery Health Channel National Body Challenge medical advisor Dr. Pamela Peeke shares her top 10 tips.
1. Get real and be specific. Write down three or four realistic goals that you can stick to. For example, "I will try to lose one pound of body fat every week. I will walk for 30 minutes minimum five days a week." Avoid fantasy-land goals that will only frustrate you.

2. Get prepared. Throw away all the junk, the processed, and the "bingeable" foods now and replace them with fresh, whole foods like lots of water and veggies. Buy a new pair of walking shoes and find some clothes in your closet you feel comfortable to walk in. During a lifestyle change, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail!

3. Get support. Whether it's your best friend, spouse, or pet, it helps to have some nonjudgmental and nurturing support when trying to lose weight, especially during trying times.

Eye health follows body care

May 8, 2008 |15:59 | Body Care | Eye Care | General Information  By : Team X

It might seem that it's a broken record playing the same stanza over and over again, but in all areas of medicine, including keeping healthy vision and eyes, the mantra is to eat sensibly, exercise, and live a healthy lifestyle.

Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center ophthalmologist Dr. David Morimoto says that although there are specific things we can do to keep our eyes in tip-top shape, keeping our bodies in shape is key. After all, our eyes benefit from good nutrition and healthy living, just as our hearts and other organs do.

"Eat your green leafy vegetables and your fruits," Morimoto said, "don't smoke, and take care of any underlying conditions you may have, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes."

When you think about how important your vision is in your everyday life, you want to take care of it and have it get you through without problems, he said.

But even if you're taking meticulous care of yourself, don't forget to make those appointments to your eye-care professional. Some eye diseases will sneak up on you with no symptoms until it is too late.

Fifty percent of people with glaucoma don't even know they have it, he said. There are no symptoms at the beginning, and people with glaucoma can have normal vision, but they are at risk for loss of vision if it's not caught by an eye doctor.

Hair care tips

May 6, 2008 |18:16 | General Information | Hair Care  By : Team X

1. It is important to use a mild shampoo specific to various hair types to cleanse and preserve your hair’s luster. A clarifier should also be used to wash away dirt and other chemicals from the scalp and the hair.

2. Hair should be washed with lukewarm water because warm water strips away natural oils from the scalp. However over washing should also be avoided to prevent complete rinsing away of protective oils.

3. A conditioner enriched with sunscreen should be used. This forms a protective layer ensuring a shine that stays longer. A pinch of sunscreen may also be applied on the hair and scalp to be washed away later for that extra protection.

4. Warm winds are natural blow dryers and therefore blow dryers and steaming irons should be kept away in summer. Excessive drying can damage the hair and give it a limp look.

5. Hair coloring and highlighting causes dryness that makes the hair appear dull and coarse to touch. Hence, control experimenting with your hair in summer months.

6. Even though summer calls for swimming and lounging in cool waters, one must not overlook the harmful effects of chlorinated water on hair. The best way to lessen the damage is to rinse the hair before and after swimming. The hair wash prior to swimming enables the hair follicle to soak up fresh water that minimizes the intake of chlorine or salt water. The hair wash after swimming rinses away the chemicals that might linger in the hair.

7. A hat gives ideal protection from the burning effects of the sun. It is effective in cutting out the sun’s rays and reduces the damage to a large extent. While mesh hats are translucent and allow sun’s rays to penetrate through, hats of breathable fabric like cotton should be used. An umbrella may also be used for protection against the sun’s damaging rays.

Eye care experience a great one

“Seeing is believing” I want to share my appreciation for being able to see better than I have in years, not because my optical condition is so unusual but because the prescriptions were incorrect and the glasses were poorly made.

I have had five pair over four years from different doctors and different opticians. This time I went to Dr. Clements, here in Fallbrook, and their optician, Lenore Buirgy. The difference in the clarity of my vision with the glasses they made for me is remarkable.

Also, Lenore was a great help in choosing a frame. The frame she suggested fits so comfortably and I get many compliments. I am truly grateful and want all of Fallbrook to know they’re here.

Dr. Bronner's Files Lawsuit Against Major Organic Body Care Brands

May 2, 2008 |17:44 | Body Care | General Information  By : Team X

The controversy that has been brewing in the natural body care sector for years hit a new high point today, as counterculture icon Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps filed a lawsuit against other major players.

The advocacy group Organic Consumers Association (OCA) reports that the family-owned Dr. Bronner's filed suit in California Superior Court today against numerous brands "to force them to stop making misleading organic labeling claims." Dr. Bronner's and the OCA have been campaigning on this issue for a long time, and had warned the companies that they would pursue legal action if they did not conform to their requests.

The debate is pretty complicated and nuanced, and I first wrote about it back in 2004. The moderate industry group Organic Trade Association has been working to develop guidelines for the personal care industry that will be clear for consumers, perhaps along the lines of the USDA's strong organic rules for food. Hopefully they will be third-party verified, like the food system.

But that hasn't come about yet, so there is still a lot of uncertainty when it comes to "natural" body care. On one hand are those who insist that body care products be held to the same levels of natural and organic as foods, whereas others say the unique properties of the products necessitate different standards to reflect that. For instance, few Americans are likely to want to refrigerate their shampoo to keep it from breaking down quickly.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Dandruff:

*Mix up a spoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut oil. Instead of coconut you can use neem oil otherwise. Keep this mixture in a air tight container, preferably a glass container and use this oil to massage your scalp before going to bed. Practice this continuously for at least 15 days and feel the difference of your healthy scalp. After 15 days do it for alternate days for the best of result.
*Add a spoon of castor oil, mustard oil and little coconut (or neem) oil and massage your scalp every night and have a shampoo the day next.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Hair loss:

* Boil neem leaves in water. Cool, strain and rinse hair with it.
