A bank officer spent almost RM14,000 at a skin care centre to no avail, the Consumer Claims Tribunal heard. Siti Noor Omar, 30, said she approached a New York Skin Sdn Bhd branch in Plaza Pelangi last October for treatment, and was told by an employee that it would cost RM10,000.
Siti Noor told tribunal president Maznah Haron that she paid the sum plus RM990 for the “starter package” before she could undergo the entire treatment process. She later paid a further RM2,800 and RM5,400 although no improvement was evident from the first treatment.
“I realised that I had been cheated after I had forked out thousands of ringgit for nothing,” Siti Noor added. Maznah ordered the company to refund RM13,818 to Siti Noor within 14 days. In a separate case, a book distribution company was ordered to refund RM2,368 and RM1,619 to two housewives respectively after they bought English education books for their children.
Lew Kin Ling, 35, and Woon Xin Feen, 32, said they had bought the books to help their children improve their English language. They said the company promised that a tutor would be sent to their houses to teach their children. “However, no tutor came, and when we complained, the company told us to be patient,” said Lew.
A Raffles Distributors (M) Sdn Bhd representative said it was their salesman and not the company that made the offer to send a tutor. However, Maznah said the company must keep their promise as the offer was part of their campaign to attract customers to buy their books.
