Chinese youth turn metrosexual

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

Metrosexuals -- heterosexual urban males who pay attention to their personal appearance and lifestyle -- are slowly taking Chinese cities by storm. People say China has entered the "gender-neutral era" where men can now reveal their emotional side.

In college, now 28-year-old Ge Candong's classmates mocked him for being "unfashionable". Since then, he has transformed into a metrosexual, a man who is sensitive, caring and not embarrassed about enjoying a stylish life. He takes care to coordinate his outfits and follows a rigorous skin-care regimen, reported Xinhua. "Dressing well and using make-up is good for me and I'm happy to be a handsome gentleman," he said.

He was plagued by dark circles around his eyes while in college, and it was at that time he began to worry about his "facial issues". A woman friend suggested he try eye-cream. Since then, he spends a lot of his free time flipping through fashion magazines and browsing websites focused on male beauty.

He spent $2,000 on skin-care products in Los Angeles, $1,575 on ties and suits in Hong Kong and used up his limit on two credits card in Dubai. Cheng Gong, another of China's increasingly stylish young men, said he prefers an "appropriate" look rather than high fashion. He, however, believes men should be "masculine" and dress according to the occasion.

An art director Xiao Yaohui agrees. "A woman should dress like a woman, and a man like a man," he said, even though he agrees that "the mainland has entered the so-called 'gender-neutral era' in which men and women are interdependent and treated more equally".

"Two decades ago, no man would dare walk down the street in pink, but now one in every 10 men has a pink shirt or coat in his wardrobe," he said. For a global skin-care product company, the year 2011 saw a 40 percent jump in the men's skin-care market in China -- five times that of the women's market.

The China Cosmetics Association says the L'Oreal company earned at least one billion yuan (around $157.5 million) from its men's skin-care products in China in 2010.

Skincare Tips During Menopause: Skincare-News Presents 7 Ways to Manage Oily Skin

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

Menopause can leave the skin feeling imbalanced and upset, and for some women, this means the onset of oily skin. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Oily Skin During Menopause: 7 Ways to Manage Symptoms," provides simple skincare tips to help women achieve a clear, balanced complexion during menopause.

When hormones fluctuate, women who once had dry skin might find themselves with oily skin that never feels quite clean. This can mean breakouts, too. Finding a cleanser that combats excess oil and shine should be the first step in balancing the complexion, but how can women find oil-controlling cleansers that are appropriate for aging skin?

After cleansing, most women have probably gotten used to applying day cream or night cream to moisturize the skin. Many people skip this step when faced with oily skin, because the skin already seems to have enough moisture on its own, although one of the most important steps in a comprehensive menopausal skincare routine is to moisturize the skin. Won't most moisturizers just clog the pores and leave the skin oilier than before?

In the teen years, many women reached for powder to cover shiny areas of their faces. But on mature skin, powder can settle into fine lines and make wrinkles look more pronounced. If women must forgo the powder, how can they control excess shine that builds up throughout the day?

Find answers to all these questions and much more on skincare during menopause, including how to make homemade scrubs and spa products, at Skincare-News

Skincare-News.com consistently covers all skincare and beauty topics from head to toe. Check out these latest articles:

Skin-care tips to look your best at any age

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

No matter how old we are, we all know we should be doing some kind of skin-care regimen. But many of us don't know exactly what we should be doing — or when.

That's why we asked Boca Raton dermatologist Dr. Marta Rendon, a nationally renowned skin-care and hair-loss expert, to share with us what tends to happen to our skin at different stages in our lives — and what we can do ourselves to combat the aesthetic effects of aging.

WOMEN

In your 30s

What happens:

Wrinkles of the lateral eyes begin to appear.
Minimal wrinkling of the glabella and possibly one or two lines on the forehead appears.
The skin begins to get drier.
Some areas of sun-related photo-damage appear around the hairline, forehead and sides of face.
Skin-care tips: Wear sunglasses to prevent habitual squinting, which causes wrinkling. Use sun-protection cream daily; apply pigment lighteners for melasma; begin daily application of facial creams that contain retinoids and antioxidants.

In your 40s

What happens:

Slight thinning and graying of the hair occurs.
Leg veins and spider veins become more apparent.
Hemangiomas, angiomas, and melasma appear.
Skin tags and photo-damage increase.
Wrinkles apparent in the 30s become more accented.
Skin-care tips: Continue skin-care regimen from your 30s and add products that contain alpha hydroxy acids. Also, begin applying eye cream and skin fillers.

In your 50s

What happens:

Thinning of the hair continues.
Nails become brittle.
Adult-onset acne occurs.
Facial structure changes. This occurs due to bone reabsorption and osteoclast breakdown, which modifies soft tissue fat loss. In addition, a decrease in collagen causes less skin elasticity, resulting in fine lines and wrinkling. This is seen especially with eyelid skin and the fat pads of the cheeks.
Skin-care tips: Add usage of products with biotin to combat hair loss, and begin using products with peptides.

In your 60s

What happens:

Loss of volume and downward sagging of the soft tissue occurs.
Hair becomes thin and more brittle from decreased hydration and vitamins.
Eyebrows descend
Upper eyelids begin to sag
Excess skin appears on the upper eyelids and crow's feet become prominent.
Loss of lower lip volume.
Flattening of upper lip due to loss of volume.
Corners of mouth begin to hang
Jowling underneath the jaw
Skin-care tips: Add usage of products with growth factors, increase usage of pigment lighteners if necessary and continue usage of retinoids.

MEN

In your 30s

What happens:

Wrinkling usually starts (causes include: lack of hydration; a breakdown of collagen; loss of subcutaneous fat; sun exposure)
Hair loss usually begins.
At around age 35, the rate of cell renewal slows, making the skin appear dull.
Skin-care tips: Use sun protection daily. Wear sunglasses to prevent habitual squinting, which causes wrinkling. Also, clean, exfoliate, and moisturize daily. Men who shave around the chin and cheeks daily might not see superficial wrinkling until they reach their late 40s or 50s in that region of the face because they are exfoliating daily while shaving.

In your 40s

What happens:

Hair loss increases
40 percent of men begin experience androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) Sun-related photo-damage, rosacea, and wrinkling become apparent (especially in men who are lean and/or particularly muscular) By habitually making the same facial expressions, fine lines eventually imprint on the face and around the eyes. Skin-care tips: Continue with skin-care regimen from your 30s and add usage of products that contain alpha hydrox acids. Also, to combat hair loss, begin topical application of Rogaine to the scalp.

Bedford firm takes wrinkles out of skin-care venture

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

A pair of local businesswomen took their anti-aging product line from concept to market with barely a wrinkle. Their professional-strength skin therapy system, Unison, hit store shelves this week, just one year after Kathy MacGillivray of Bedford was inspired by a line of skin-care masks her friend and now business partner Brenda Gallagher discovered while living in Shanghai.

Bedford firm takes wrinkles out of skin-care venture

“(Gallagher) came home from China looking really good; like, wow, she was glowing ... and we realized that there was nothing like this here and we both thought that we should consider importing this stuff into Canada,” MacGillivray told The Chronicle Herald in an interview Tuesday.

In a matter of weeks, the pair put their expertise and connections to work to develop a unique line of affordable, wrinkle-battling face masks. With more than a decade of experience in the textile industry, MacGillivray, founder and owner of uMaMe Maternity Inc. and Reform Jeans by uMaMe, was familiar with Chinese factories, packaging facilities and pitching to major retailers.

“I know how critical it is to have the top packaging and product at the best price,” she said.  “(Unison is) like a spa treatment at home that’s very affordable. ..... Consumers are price-sensitive these days and we knew we wanted these products in stores like Lawtons.”

Made of high-quality collagen and priced for mass distribution at a maximum cost of $5.99 each, the Hydrogel lip, eye, face and neck masks “unite three of the most effective and powerful skin-rejuvenating compounds found: hyaluronic acid, crystal collagen and (polyglutamic acid, otherwise known as y-PGA),” according to the Unison website. The all-natural masks are vegan, paraben-free and made of natural plant collagen that warms with body heat and forms to the skin.

With government approval in the bag and a partnership with two additional investors, their wish was realized. The product piqued the interest of buyers at Lawtons and every outlet in the Maritimes now carries the complete line of Unison products. After just one pitch, Lawtons wanted limited, exclusive rights to sell the products.

Riding the wave of momentum, MacGillivray and Gallagher plan to work with Lawtons to roll out their product line across Canada within the year. They’re also working on additional products and a men’s line.

Two doctors in Brazil also signed contracts with the fledgling company this month. “Our next goal is to get into the U.S,” MacGillivray said.

“I suspect we’ll be successful within our first few months getting out across Canada, and then we’ll definitely be in Brazil and then onto the U.S. ... We really couldn’t believe it when we found there were no other products like it on the shelves in Canada.”

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

A cosmetic dermatology expert has stated that skincare should change throughout the year to keep the skin in its best condition and avoid hazards that could increase the likelihood of the patient needing skin cancer treatment.

Dr Helen Robertshaw, who specialises in skin surgery, said the health of a patient's skin is affected by hormonal changes, their general health and external factors such as the weather and environment.  People should tailor their skincare regime to their individual needs and react to any deterioration, she added.  The expert particularly stressed the importance of a good quality sunscreen to help patients reduce the risk of them developing skin cancer. She advised people to wear a product with SPF 50 and one that best suits their skin type.  According to Cancer Research UK, an alteration in the size, shape or colour of an existing mole is the most common indictor of skin cancer.

The beauty of homegrown body care

Posted in : Body Care

(added few months ago!)

The beauty of homegrown body careWest Australian body care brands are earning a solid reputation in the beauty industry partly because many insist on using our homegrown ingredients in their products.

Among WA brands sourcing local materials are Sodashi, Elemental Organics, Mokosh Organic and Fair Trade Skincare, Tinderbox, Ecotanicals All Natural Skin Care, Savi Australia Organic Skincare, Ayana Organics and Xquisit Organics. Popular locally sourced ingredients include avocado oil, beeswax, olive oil, lavender oil, tea-tree oil and sandalwood oil.

Xquisit Organics' Camilla Sundbladh says that her aim as an organic skincare producer is to deal with local farmers. "You get the freshest ingredient, if you go farm direct," she says. Elemental Organic Botanical Skincare's Jasper Trendall says that if possible, the company uses plants grown in its own production gardens, or by other WA producers; for example, steam-distilled hydrosols include locally grown lavender and lemon tea-tree.

"Hydrosols contain a blend of water and oil-soluble aromatic compounds," he says. "We custom-distil small batches of plant material to preserve the variety and complexity of compounds in the hydrosol and then use the hydrosols as ingredients in many products."

What a facialist wishes you knew

Posted in : Skin Care

(added few months ago!)

Get glowing skin by following these rules from Elena Arboleda, head aesthetician at Mario Badescu Skin Care.
1. Spill it.
Clients forget to mention whether they're on medication. Some drugs can affect skin and can turn treatments painful, so don't hold back info. The more information you give your aesthetician, the better she'll be able to address your skin's needs.

2. Drink up.
Water is the No. 1 ingredient for healthy skin. Dehydrated skin tears and gets red and irritated more easily.

3. Use moisturizers.
Many people think they don't need them, but moisturizers act as a barrier between your skin and your makeup (not to mention pollution) and help prevent clogged pores.

4. Hands off!
Avoid picking at a blemish. Instead, while it heals, soothe and reduce redness by mixing a little cornstarch with water or egg white and dabbing it on the spot.
