July 7, 2009 |11:13 | General Information | Health Fitness Tips  By : Team X

In Part 2 of this series, Health Fitness Guide – Desire, the Framework for All Achievement, I talked about desire. Though a good framework, desire is not enough to reach your fitness goals. Every day we desire something; a higher paying job, a new car, better health, etc. We can even want these things with a burning desire but how often do those things happen through just wishing? About as often as you win the lottery, right?

If desire's not enough, what's the next step? What will help you attain that which you desire, your fitness goals?

Does This Really Work: Scented Nail Polish

April 29, 2009 |09:53 | Health Fitness Tips  By : Team X

Do you remember Scratch ‘n Sniff Stickers? I used to get them from teachers in grammar school when I behaved in class. I would collect them and put them on my nails to show them off since they were cute and smelled nice. Now, Revlon has launched Fruitful Temptations ($5), eight limited edition shades of polish that smell fruity when dry. It’s like wearing those stickers on my nails again, sans the cartoons.

I tried Passionate Fruit, a purple hue, on my fingernails and Pretty in Papaya, an orangey red color, on my toenails. The names are based on the color of their respective fruit. At first, it smelled like regular stinky polish when applied.

Outdoor fitness Tips to brave the cold and get fit

January 13, 2009 |12:14 | Health Fitness Tips  By : Team X

The cold is no excuse-For many of us, the winter season means limiting the time we spend outdoors and, unfortunately, time we spend exercising. Personal trainer, fitness consultant and founder of WorkoutsForYou Lynn Bode says there isn’t any specific reasoning for the decision, other than the fact that people use the cold weather as an excuse to abandon their workout routines.

“Often people have a feeling that they can just hibernate the winter away,” says Bode. “For those that work out outside, the cold becomes an easy excuse for them to get derailed. And even for the inside exercisers, they may not want to even go to the trouble of having to get ‘out’ in the cold just to get from their house to the gym.”

Tips to fight winter laziness and enjoy outdoor fitness-The fact is, keeping up with your outdoor winter workouts only requires minimal preparation – as long as you know what to expect. With the help of Bode’s expertise, we can all fight winter laziness and actually enjoy working out outdoors.

Is your personal trainer damaging your health?

December 22, 2008 |17:00 | Health Fitness Tips  By : Team X

Nicole Thornley was never seriously out of shape. A former international swimmer who represented England and Great Britain in Commonwealth and European championships.

she had long considered super-fitness her priority.Years of training meant that her 5ft 10in frame was just under 9 stones of toned muscle.

On retiring from competitive swimming in 2005, however, she found herself facing the reality of less athletic mortals.“I’ve never been fat, but I needed to tone up,” says the 31-year-old. “I joined a gym, but didn’t know which equipment to use as all I’d ever done was swim.”

Needing direction, Thornley put her faith in a personal trainer she hired at her gym. It was a decision that she thought would re-ignite her passion for exercise; instead it left her barely able to walk.Like the 80,000 people expected to join the gym rush in January  a figure that is 65 per cent higher than in any other month of the year  Thornley felt that the tailored fitness regimen offered by a personal trainer would benefit her far more than group classes.

That extra layer of flab on your sides is hard to get rid of  and nobody wants it. This exercise will help by working your transverse abdominal muscles, as well as challenging your balance, says Molly Tittle, owner of Mfitness  a mobile Pilates-centered fitness business.

She focuses on form and body positioning for exercises with clients she teaches in classes or individually, offering Pilates instruction with an "athletic twist" suitable for both men and women.

Tittle, who trains the national team for USA Diving here, teaches at ReForm Movement, 11099 Village Square Lane, Fishers; and Invoke Studio, 970 Fort Wayne Ave.; as well as at local businesses and in individuals' homes. Tittle shows how to do this exercise, using a soft 9-inch-diameter ball.

Scanning the supermarket tabloids, you get a good idea of what’s going on with the Hollywood baby boom. You learn all about whose kid is a brat, who spent a fortune on designer diapers and how quickly those actresses and models shed the baby weight. Sometimes they seem to bounce back overnight.

But for new mothers in the real world, weight loss is rarely that easy. In addition to the fatigue that comes from caring for the baby, the body goes through many changes, including loosened joints and tendons, stress on weight-bearing joints, loss of balance, fatigue and decreased bone mineral density.

These changes don’t necessarily make working out more challenging, but being aware of them and working with them can help keep fitness safe and enjoyable.

When to get moving-  How soon you get back into the swing of things after your pregnancy depends on a few factors. “It depends on what happened at delivery,” says Elizabeth Wilson, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Women’s Health Associates. “Someone who’s had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery can get back to exercising pretty immediately, in about two to three weeks.”
