Six Good Skin Care Habits to Break

There are many recommended skin care habits universally deemed “good” for you. But, sometimes you may have too much of a good thing. According to the Skincare-news.com team, six of these good skin care habits may actually be more detrimental than helpful.
1. Habit: Adhering to the same skin care routine. Daily routines of cleansing and moisturizing are vital for maintaining healthy skin and avoiding clogged pores, breakouts and thirsty skin. Why you should break the habit: While consistency is key, it can lead to lackluster skin and little to no improvement because your skin becomes used to the same products.
What you can do: Try a higher concentration of ingredients. If a topical treatment with 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide isn’t doing the trick for your acne, try one with 5 percent. If a cleanser with 15 percent glycolic acid still leaves your skin looking dull, try one with 20 percent. Listen to your skin and adjust for the seasons as necessary.
2. Habit: Being too gentle. If you have dry skin or sensitive skin, you opt for mild products and usually skip the exfoliation step. Why you should break the habit: If you never exfoliate, or don’t exfoliate frequently enough, you’ll acquire a build-up of dead skin cells, which leads to clogged pores, acne and a dull complexion. The build-up prevents products from penetrating the surface of your skin, making it even harder for mild products to do their job.
What you can do: If you have sensitive skin, try exfoliating once a week and three times a week if you have oily skin. If once a week with mild products is still too much for your sensitive skin, consult with a dermatologist to develop a custom routine that will be gentle but effective.
3. Habit: Relying exclusively on organic products. Organic products contain 95 percent organic ingredients and avoid ingredients which may be harmful to people, animals and the environment.
Why you should break the habit: Just because it is organic doesn’t mean it is gentle. A lot of organic skin care products contain fruit which can irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions. You’ll miss out on the benefits of traditional ingredients (such as retinol and retinoids, which are proven to improve your skin) if you exclusively use organic products.
What you can do: Read the labels. Incorporate both organic and traditional inorganic products into your skincare regiment. 4. Habit: Applying sunscreen, but not enough. Sunscreen is an absolute must, it shields your skin from UV damage and protects your skin from premature aging, sunburn and skin cancer.
Why you should break the habit: Applying sunscreen can give you a false sense of security. You may not be applying enough or applying it correctly. The Skin Cancer Foundation says using sunscreen isn’t enough to fully protect from UV rays.
What you can do: Take note of your use. Apply at least a shot glass worth of sunscreen every two hours, or sooner after sweating or swimming. Use a minimum of SPF 15 for daily use. 5. Habit: Using too much product. It’s easy to fall into the mentality of if some works, more will be even better and more effective.
Why you should break the habit: Too much moisturizer will actually create a thick film that stays on your skin and clogs pores. Too much acne treatment can dry out your skin, causing it to actually produce more oil. Using more than a dime-sized amount of any scrub, regardless of how gentle it is, can actually be too abrasive on your skin.
What you can do: Follow the product’s instructions or ask your dermatologist. Using a pea-sized amount is a good rule of thumb. And, your moisturizer will be more effective if applied to slightly damp skin, within 3 minutes of washing your face.
6. Habit: Not wasting products. You refuse to waste your skin care products, especially the pricey ones. Why you should break the habit: Using products past their prime can irritate your skin and even give you an infection.
What you can do: Learn when products expire and toss them when they do. Extend the life of your skin care products by storing in a cool, dark place and washing your hands before applying. Overall, the Skincare-news team counsels to listen to your skin. It will tell you if you’re doing too much, or not enough, of something.
